When shopping for a Resistol cowboy hat, you’ll often come across labels like 6X, 10X, 30X, 100X and a “Pure.” But what do these factors really mean?
X Marks the Hat
The Resistol Standard
Unlike other brands, Resistol sets its own rigorous standard for the X rating system. Our factory developed the X rating system that Resistol follows. Many brands follow the X quality system, but the rating system is not regulated, meaning the X standards are not comparable between brands. For instance, a 100X Resistol cowboy hat may be the same quality as a 1000X in another brand.
Since there’s no industry-wide benchmark, Resistol has set the standard in X quality rating because Resistol controls every step of the fur felt hat making process. From hand-selecting premium fur to crafting fur-felt hats, Resistol controls the hat making process entirely in-house. This meticulous approach ensures unmatched quality and consistency. Every hat undergoes a careful final inspection before shipping to guarantee superior craftsmanship and durability.
The X Factor in Felt Hats
The X rating for felt cowboy hats represents the quality of materials used, specifically the blend of hatters’ furs. It’s a scale that reflects the mix of beaver, wild hare, and rabbit fur—the finer the fur, the higher the X rating.
Beaver fur, known for its durability and excellent weather resistance, plays a key role in determining the hat’s quality. More premium beaver fur in the mix means a higher X rating. For example, a Resistol 6X hat is typically made from 100% European rabbit fur and a Resistol 20X hat contains a premium blend of beaver and Argentine hare fur.
The higher the X number, the more durable, water-resistant, and longer-lasting the hat will be. Additionally, high-X hats have a shinier, more luxurious finish.
X Ratings in Straw Hats
The X rating works a bit differently for straw cowboy hats. It measures the quality of the straw body based on the weave and fineness of the straw reeds.
A tighter weave and finer straw reed indicate a higher X rating, reflecting the hat’s craftsmanship and overall quality. The finer the materials and construction, the higher the X designation, ensuring a superior finished product.
Like felt hats, the higher the X rating, the better the craftsmanship and overall quality of the straw hat.
Exception to the Rule
The Resistol Pure stands apart from other hats as it doesn’t follow the typical X measurement scale. It is crafted from the finest-quality beaver fur—pure beaver belly.
Known as the ultimate standard in hat craftsmanship, this exceptional fur is considered the best available and is incomparable to any other on the X scale. Made in America, the Resistol Pure boasts natural weather-resistant qualities, ensuring its durability for a lifetime of wear.
Understanding the X rating helps you make an informed decision, ensuring you get a cowboy hat that matches your needs and style preferences.
