Find Your Signature Look
Every Resistol cowboy hat tells a story. Or, we should say, it tells part of a story. If you look back at the men who wore a cowboy hat well, from Wild Bill Hickok to John Wayne to Kevin Costner in Yellowstone, you’ll find that it was a situation where the wearer chose a hat profile and style that defined who he was and what he stood for. Some men are made for a classic cattleman’s look, something as clean, crisp, and straightforward as the Texas sun at midday. Other cowboys are at their best with bold, sometimes even wild, styles. It all depends on the man.
We understand current trends. We respect time-honored traditions. Our selection of straw and felt hats contains options for every face, every identity, every cowboy way of life. Here is a guide to our most popular hat profiles, as well as our major collections.
Straw Profiles
The BA Profile
The BA Profile, or Best All-Around Profile, combines our two most popular styles. The low cattleman’s crown from our 30 Profile is paired with the shovel-front brim from our RB Profile. The result is an all-occasion cowboy hat that’s ready to wear straight out of the box.
The Telescope Profile
Evocative of the gambling halls and legendary card games of the Old West, the Telescope Profile features a flat, oval crown with an indentation around the edge. The brim has a slight curve. The Telescope Profile suggests sophistication and opulence, all while maintaining authenticity and cowboy character. If this is the look you’re after, check out our 10X Gambler Cowboy Hat.
The 63 Profile
Going for old-school cowboy cool? If so, consider the 63 Profile. With its tall crown and short brim, this profile echoes the classic cowboy hats of the mid-twentieth century. Think James Arness in Gunsmoke and Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter. Our Quarter Horse and Hickok designs feature the 63 Profile.
The 83 Profile
The 83 Profile is defined by its tall rounded brick crown and slightly curved medium brim. You don’t have to be a rodeo man to wear an 83 Profile, but this cowboy hat style is featured throughout our Tuff Hedeman Collection. 83 Profile hats do pair beautifully with gold buckles, after all.
The 35 Profile
Featured predominantly in the Resistol Classics Collection, the 35 Profile offers a cattleman’s crown with a flatter brim. This handsome, traditional profile holds its own anywhere from the ranch to the rodeo to Sunday supper. If this is the style for you, take a look at our 10X Cattleman Cowboy Hat.
The 30 Profile
The 30 Profile offers a 4 1/8” low cattleman’s crown – our most popular crown style – with a medium curved brim. We get why our customers like it. The 30 Profile was designed for none other than George Strait, the King of Country himself.
Felt Profiles
The RB Profile
The RB Profile is named after former Hatco president Ricky Bolin, four-time NFR qualifier and Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Famer. This profile has a hand-shaped cattleman’s look with a shovel-front brim for a graceful yet rugged silhouette.
Straw & Felt Profiles
The CJ Profile
Inspired by country music star Cody Johnson’s signature look, the CJ Profile features a blockier crown with a squared-off brim. A defining feature is the flat, rectangular crease running down the middle of the top, with side indents that are less prominent than those on a cattleman’s crown. Find the CJ Profile in our Cody Johnson Collection.
The 87 Profile
With its sharp curves along the brim and low tapered cattleman’s crown, the 87 Profile embodies the American cowboy hat. This style has shown up on screen in classics like Tombstone, Lonesome Dove, and The Wild Bunch. The 87 Profile also makes regular appearances at dance halls, rodeos, and onstage at the Grand Ole Opry. It’s as cowboy as they come.
Open Crown
An open crown gives you a blank canvas. Choose your own crease or wear it as-is for a bold, rounded look. When our forefathers got a new cowboy hat, it typically came in an open crown. The result was a hat as individualized as the man who wore it.
