Cowboy Hat Care

Tips for longevity and style

A well cared for cowboy hat is more than an accessory—it’s a statement of style, tradition and personality. Whether you own a straw or fur-felt hat, proper maintenance ensures it remains in top-notch condition for years to come. Follow these essential cleaning and care tips to keep your hat looking its best.

Caring for Your Cowboy Hat

  1. Avoid excessive heat from stoves, radiators, lamps or car windows. Mixed with perspiration, it can cause shrinkage of the sweatband, altering the hat’s fit.
  2. If your straw hat gets wet, simply shake off excess water as soon as possible. For fur-felt hats, turn down the "self-conforming" leather sweatband and stand the hat on the sweatband to dry naturally. Never rest a wet hat on its brim, as this can cause it to lose its shape.
  3. To put on or remove your hat, hold the brim in front and back; handle the crown as little as possible.
  4. Store your hat upside down on the crown on a clean surface or in a box. Do not store it right side up on a flat surface, as this can cause the brim to flatten.
  5. Occasionally turn down the sweatband to dry between wears to prevent perspiration and hair products from penetrating the straw or felt, which can lead to staining and deterioration.

Cleaning Your Cowboy Hat

For Straw Hats: To remove dust or surface dirt from your cowboy hat, simply wipe it away with a clean, dry cloth, and then again with a slightly damp cloth.

For Fur-Felt Hats: Use a soft brush, starting on the left side and brushing counterclockwise toward the back, continuing around for a thorough cleaning. Avoid liquid cleaners if your light-colored fur-felt cowboy hat becomes spotted with water or grease—use a little baby talc or cornstarch instead.

By following these simple care techniques, you can preserve the quality, shape and style of your cowboy hat. Whether you're wearing it for work, a night out or a special event, a well-maintained hat will always make a lasting impression.
