RESISTOL CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF THE BLACK GOLD
For 50 years, Resistol’s Black Gold felt hat has stood at the intersection of craftsmanship, ambition and the enduring spirit of the American West. Created as an homage to the high-stakes world of the Texas oil fields, the Black Gold was designed to embody strength and crafted to endure.
In 1977, master hatter Bob Posey’s innovative felt blend, signature self-felt hatband and distinctive buckle set gave the Black Gold its renowned resilience and ability to hold its shape through the demands of Western life.As the first felt hat to utilize these features, the Black Gold would go on to become the gold standard of felt hats. Bold yet refined, the iconic silhouette became a signature among world champions, ranchers, cowboys and competitors whose lives were built on precision, perseverance and a pursuit of excellence.
For five decades, the Black Gold has been there for the moments that define a cowboy’s legacy: victories beneath arena lights, generations of ranching traditions and gold buckle dreams becoming reality.
Resistol President Devin Marcum reflected on the significance of the Black Gold’s stylistic innovations, “ In 1977 Bob Posey created more than another great cowboy hat. He created a hat that would become part of the history of Resistol—and eventually, part of the history of the American West. The 20X Black Gold, with its unmistakable sueded finish and innovative self-band buckle, the Black Gold was unlike anything else. Bob created the self-band buckle by taking a narrow piece of material from the same hat body and transforming it into a distinctive band, finished with a beautiful buckle set. It was craftsmanship with a purpose—and a design that would become recognizable to generations of cowboy hat wearers.”
To commemorate the milestone, Team Resistol’s top endorsees, including world champions Trevor Brazile, Stetson Wright, Joe Beaver and Tuff Hedeman, among 20 other world champions, gathered for an elevated celebration of the iconic hat. Framed by Black Gold brims and gold buckles, the champions raised a toast to five decades of craftsmanship and the generations of Western athletes, ranchers and enthusiasts who have carried the Black Gold legacy forward.
Today, the 20X Black Gold remains a defining expression of Resistol craftsmanship and a timeless symbol of strength, ambition and Western heritage. As Resistol celebrates 50 years of Black Gold and looks ahead to its centennial in 2027, the brand tips its hat to a legacy built beneath the brim.
“Styles come and go. Trends change. But some hats become part of who we are. And after all these years, when a Black Gold is placed on someone’s head, something happens that no trend can replace,” said Marcum.
Since 1927, Resistol has crafted premium headwear for those who live the Western lifestyle everyday.
